Le Macchiole could be called the “Boutique of Bolgheri”. Today Bolgheri is among the most famous wine regions in Italy, but this seemed impossible in 1983, the year Le Macchiole was founded. A time when the area was known simply for a its proximity to the sea and abundant fruit and grain production. Still, two Bolgherians, Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, were so fascinated by viticulture and the idea of being able to produce wine that they decided to embark on this adventure anyway, despite many people thinking they would never make it their living. This wine is the alter ego of their famous Paleo red and is made in extremely small quantities. Made with Chardonnay and a little Sauvignon Blanc, this wine’s strong Mediterranean character boasts intensity, flavor and depth in equal parts. This is a surprising wine, especially in terms of its ability to age.
