In 2022, Italian wine exports abroad reached a new all-time high.
The countries where Italy exports the most
Italian wine has been enjoyed in Europe and Asia, and this has been possible thanks to an exceptionally rich harvest.
As we know, it is not easy to produce great wines in Italy. The Tuscan hills are one of the oldest in Europe, and its geographical position allows us to take advantage of sunny days all year round, and its temperate climate makes the grapes very hardy. Tuscany’s harvest in 2022 was also excellent, with productive crops, yielding large quantities of good wines.
Exports of Italian wine in 2022
In 2022, Italian wine exports abroad reached new records with 10 million bottles being exported, reflecting a growth of 12% compared to 2021.
At a national level, all regions recorded a growth in exports. Trentino Alto Adige went from 4 million in 2021 to 5 million in 2022, Campania exceeded 3 million, Sicily rose to 2.5 million, while Emilia Romagna closed with 2 million bottles exported in 2022.
Exports and the 2022 grape harvest
The 2022 grape harvest in Italy turned out very positively, with excellent quality and an amazing quantity of wine. Although the weather did not always favor grape ripening, farmers worked miracles to succeed in producing a perfect vintage.
Consumers repaid Italian wine producers with enthusiasm and confidence, coming to buy more of our products than any other European country.
Last year, Italian wine exports abroad grew by 6% over the previous year, exceeding €33 million. This year, wine sales in Italy were €8 billion, an increase of 8%. The 2022 vintage saw record production, with a 5% increase over 2021.
The wine sector is increasingly important to the national economy with the sector’s added value for 2018 at €7.7 billion, representing 3.3% of the total Italian economy. And 92% of Italy’s production is exported abroad, and 97% of government agricultural interventions are for agriculture and forestry.
At La Civiltà del Bere, we are happy to do our best to contribute to the distribution and export of Italian wine abroad, especially in Dubai, where we have recently opened a second office that we hope will soon be doing good business, for a 2023 of enjoying good wines and spirits.
