Ambonnay is one of 17 villages classified as 100% Grand Cru. Also known as “Le Gran Noir” because of the almost total presence of Pinot Noir (80%), and the great personality of these black grapes. The village is located in the southeastern part of the Montagne de Reims, meaning the vineyards are generally sheltered from the cold Atlantic winds by the mountain. Among the Grand Cru villages, this is one of the largest with 383 hectares planted with vines. Almost all the major labels own vineyards in Ambonnay. The Coutier family has been here, producing Champagne since the 1800s and it owns some of the best parcels. Renè Coutier sells about 30,000 bottles annually. His father was the first to plant Chardonnay in Ambonnay back in 1946. From those vines, an enticing Blanc de Blanc is produced that pays homage to the terroir – a long-standing, favorite home for Pinot Noir. Structured, mineral wines, where Pinot Noir is at its best in one of its greatest expressions, with distinct fruity notes.
R.H. Coutier’s Champagne Cuvée Henri III is made purely from Pinot Noir from grapes from Grand Cru vineyards in the village of Ambonnay. This wine is a blend of 60% from the 2011 harvest and 40% from the 2010 harvest. Extremely charming, rare and one-of-a-kind Blanc de Noirs Champagne to taste at its best – one of the greatest expressions of Ambonnay Pinot Noir.
