It was already known in the late 1800s that nebbiolo in the Barbaresco area had very different characteristics from other areas of Piedmont. For this reason, the then dean of the Royal School of Oenology in Alba, Domizio Cavazza, a resident of precisely Barbaresco, decided to bring together a number of winemakers and producers to establish a social winery that could produce a different wine, given that the nebbiolo grapes from that area were beginning to flow into what would later become the Barolo appellation.
