Massetino is a “second wine” and comes from the selection made for Masseto, the older brother with which it shares an identity.
The grapes are harvested by hand in 15-kg crates. After destemming and a light crushing, the grapes are transferred by gravity to concrete tanks, without any pumping. Each individual vineyard parcel is vinified separately. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with natural yeasts at temperatures around 25-28°C, with two or three pumpovers per day and releases made where necessary. Total time in the tanks ranges from 21 to 25 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels made with 50% new oak. After the first 12 months of aging, the wine was blended and returned to barrels for another 3 months before bottling.
To the eye, Massetino 2020’s deep purple color immediately stands out, ready to reveal its strong identity. Hints of ripe cherry and underbrush are present on the nose, blending well on the palate with the fruit’s beautiful crispness and freshness. A powerful marriage with a savory finish, Massetino 2021 perfectly embodies the typical traits of the vintage.
