Two years in first-fill Pedro Ximenez casks has not made this delicate Speyside malt a vinous whisky, but it has definitely helped to enhance its depth, body and creamy character. Benrinnes is clean and fruity on the nose, with plenty of ripe cherry notes, ranging from sweet black variety to the more tart red cherry. There is also candied orange, and a pleasantly buttery note of fresh pastry. The palate is soft but quite robust, again slightly buttery, brimming with raisins and honey, and a delicate dark sugar note. Although it is a rich profile, tending slightly toward the fatty, it is very well balanced by the maraschino cherry notes. The fullness of body results in a finish that continues to grow in intensity, with tannins that gently emerge without taking over.
